Haaretz, June 10, 2005
Danny Rubinstein
Haaretz writer Danny
Rubinstein explains that, “[f]rom a Palestinian perspective, the Israeli
facts being determined on the ground now in Jerusalem are completely
destroying any chance of East Jerusalem ever serving as the capital of the
Palestinian state. And without Jerusalem as its capital, there is no
chance of such a state ever being established.” Even though public
opinion polls show that majorities of both Palestinians and Israelis want
two countries for two nations, “[e]liminating the option of a
Palestinian capital in Jerusalem means the end of the two-state solution.

Yezid Sayigh and Khalil Shikaki
Sayigh
and Shikaki, authors of the Council on Foreign Relation’s “Report of
the Independent Task Force on Strengthening Palestinian Public
Institutions,” write that there are two obstacles to reviving the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process. One is the possibility that Israeli
Prime Minister Sharon will use the Gaza disengagement as a means of
precluding Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank. “The other obstacle is
the continuous decline in the standing of the Palestinian Authority and
its dominant party, Fatah, in the Palestinian public… Reform is crucial
if the Palestinian Authority and Fatah are to project a new public image
and to start demonstrating a real difference in policies and performance.”

Mohammad Daraghmeh
Palestinian journalist, media trainer, and
political analyst, Mohammad Daraghmeh, writes about the people of Belaen,
a small village west of Ramallah, who have shown “outstanding creativity
in devising non-violent methods of protest….Organizers of such
activities state that they have achieved better results than others using
violent methods. Abdallah Abu Rahmeh [Coordinator of the Popular Committee
Against the Wall in Belaen] stated: ‘These demonstrations have attracted
large numbers of Israeli and foreign supporters and directed media
coverage at what we do and what we suffer from. Had our demonstrations
concentrated on stone-throwing, no supporters or media would have joined
us’”

Henry Siegman
Henry Siegman, a senior
fellow on the Middle East at the Council on Foreign Relations and a former
executive head of the American Jewish Congress, shares his framework for
analyzing the Middle East. “Politically speaking, whether a viable
Palestinian state is still possible is the wrong question, if only because
by now it should be clear that Bush will not take the political risks
entailed in ensuring the creation of such a state in the face of Sharon's
determination to prevent it. The right question - the answer to which
perhaps may yet invest the peace process with the energy and direction it
now lacks - is whether there is still hope for the survival of Israel as a
Jewish state.”

Hady Amr
Hady Amr, Co-President of
the Arab Western Summit of Skills, remarks on a report written for the
Advisory Committee on U.S. Relations with the Arab World for the Centre
for Strategic and International Studies. “What is remarkable about the
effort is how it was carried out. It's a model that can be replicated in
finding ways for Americans to help Israelis and Palestinians move beyond
their differences.”

Naomi Chazan
Naomi Chazan, Professor
of Political Science and former Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, writes,
“The opportunity which emerged after the death of Yasser Arafat, the
election of Mahmoud Abbas as the new president of the Palestinian
Authority, and the approval of the Sharon disengagement plan, is
dissipating quickly. […] Only a collaborative salvage operation based on
a multi-faceted strategy and a multi-layered group of actors can reverse a
trend that threatens to thoroughly destabilize the region and compromise
the future of all those involved.

Marc Gopin
In between speaking at two seminars in Israel regarding the future of
peace and conflict in the region, I slipped out of the country into Jordan
and then on to Syria. The trip was the brainchild of Hind Kabawat, a
Syrian/Canadian attorney who I had met at the World Economic Forum. She
planned with me an unprecedented set of engagements in Damascus raising
publicly for the first time in forty years the subject of peace in the
Middle East.

Israel Policy Forum, April 8, 2005
MJ Rosenberg
Prior to last week’s meeting between American President George Bush
and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, MJ Rosenberg, Director of Policy
Analysis for the Israel Policy Forum, demonstrates the need for the
“pro-Israel camp” to reframe thinking about the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. “Getting out of the territories is not primarily a gift to the
Palestinians; it is a gift to Israel, […] the one saving grace of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict is that it is the opposite of a zero sum game.
What is good for one side, is good for the other.

"Imagine, said Dr. Tawfiq Nasser, a bunch of Israelis and
Palestinians in a room, covered with blood. Now imagine that they are not
in conflict, said Nasser, the chief executive officer of Augusta Victoria
Hospital in Arab East Jerusalem. Rather, they are Israeli and Palestinian
doctors and nurses who are bloody because they are working together to
resuscitate a wounded patient.”

The Jerusalem Post, February 24, 2005
Elhanan Reiner
Senior lecturer at the Tel Aviv University, Professor Reiner comments
on how the Israeli government's recent attempts at land expropriation in
east Jerusalem, the building of the 'separation wall' and the occupation
are affecting Jerusalem's universal status. "Maintaining the
universal character of Jerusalem depends upon maintaining her
multi-cultural texture.
This cannot be an afterthought; it must be planned for. It demands that we
bow our heads in respect before the cultures that live here."

on a "Sail for Peace" whose route includes the Mediterranean Sea,
